James studied at Sir John Cass College in London from 1974 to 1976 and qualified as a Gemmologist. He is also an elected Fellow of the Gemmological Association of Great Britain.
For 20 years he worked for Walsh Bros of Kent and Surrey and since 1998 has been an independant valuer during which time he has been assessing jewellery for several well known retail jewellery shops. He also undertakes house visits, bank visits, and consultations with solicitors and their clients for probate and legal valuations.
His vast knowledge, built up over many years, includes gold and silver, diamonds and other stones, medals, clocks and watches.
